BBC Sound Of 2013

I know it was a few days ago, but the BBC have released their ‘Sound of 2013’ poll. This consists of artist that they think will define the sound of the upcoming year. Past winners include 50 Cent, Adele and last years winner Michael Kiwanuka. I thought that this years longlist had some very good and interesting music.

However, the top 5 were not really my kind of music, and in short I didn’t rate them. But as I say there was some good stuff on the longlist. I particularly like Palma Violets. I thought they had a great individual sound. They’ve already been recognised by DJ Zane Lowe and NME, and I’ll certainly be getting they’re debut album when it comes out next month. My other favourite artist was King Krule. His track Rock Bottom was awesome, and I’ll look forward to hearing more of his stuff. His use of guitar and his voice is great and really interesting and imaginative.

Savages, another band on the list, are a band I’ve known about for a little while now, ever since I saw them at the Green Man Festival in August to be precise. I think it’s great to see more girl punk/rock bands around, because it’s a genre that to me seems to be dominated by blokes, yet I know several girls who love rock music, and I hope Savages continue their rise.

A couple of other interesting ones are Kodaline, whose song ‘All I want’ sounds a bit like a mix of Coldplay and Mumford Sons and I enjoy. Also the Weekend are another interesting band, that sound quite good, but I found a little repetitive, so won’t be rushing out to buy a full album of. Tom Odell is a piano playing singer songwriter with a great voice that was also reminiscent of Coldplay. Peace are more of pop rock band which sound like they’ve come straight of the FIFA soundtrack and are good for easy listening without being anything special.

So thats my round up of the best of the BBC Sound of 2013 longlist. If I’d been deciding the winners my top three would probably have been Palma Violets, King Krule and Savages, but then my taste tends not to be the ‘sound of the year’ so what do I know?
